Daily Press Release: Species Spotlights & Conservation News – July 16, 2026
Conservation Story: The Free-Roaming Cheetah
South Africa’s first national census of free-roaming cheetahs (2022-2026) is complete.
The data is stark.
The reality is lean.
Census Findings:
- Total Free-Roaming Individuals: 119
- Mature Adults: 83
- Cubs: 36
- Research Area: 99,800 km² across Northern Cape, North West, and Limpopo.

The Reality:
Previous estimates were roughly 70% higher.
The new baseline is scientifically robust.
It confirms fewer than 100 breeding adults remain on private farmlands.
Major Threats:
- Habitat Fragmentation: Shrinking territory.
- Fencing: Restricted movement.
- Illegal Persecution: Human-wildlife conflict.
The Strategy:
Conservationists demand revised IUCN distribution maps.
A coordinated national conservation plan is required.
Action must be immediate.

Species Spotlight: The Four Giraffes
The IUCN officially recognized four distinct giraffe species in late 2025.
The classification change is a breakthrough.
Targeted conservation is now possible.
The Four Species:
- Southern Giraffe (Giraffa giraffa)
- Northern Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis)
- Reticulated Giraffe (Giraffa reticulata)
- Masai Giraffe (Giraffa tippelskirchi)

Population Growth (2021-2026):
- Southern Giraffes: ~68,837 individuals. A 50% increase in five years.
- Northern Giraffes: ~7,037 individuals. Up ~20%.
Conservation Impact:
Three of the four species remain at risk.
Splitting the classification exposes specific vulnerabilities.
The Giraffe Conservation Foundation reports success where space is adequate and security is tight.
Uganda is a primary success story.
Five thriving populations.
Growth through translocation.
Key Statistics:
- Reticulated Giraffe: < 15,000 individuals.
- Masai Giraffe: ~34,000 individuals.
- Overall Total: Low hundreds of thousands.
